Hanging On By A Thread? Life Coach Strategies for Staging Your Comeback
If you feel like you're hanging on by a thread, keep hanging!
The fact that there's a thread offers the hope and the knowing that you're still connected. And if you're still connected by a thread (no matter how slim), you have the possibility, in any moment, of staging your comeback!
I know, personally, what it's like to feel like you're hanging on by a thread, so I don't minimize your discomfort. But, if you remember these three strategies, you will begin planting the seeds of your comeback:
(1) Silver Linings: No matter how dark or desperate situations appear to be, there is always within a seed of some good designed to help you grow. And, sometimes the only way for that growth to really take hold is for everything else (including that which you hold as precious or sacred) to fall away.
Growth can be a dark, messy, and thoroughly maddening process. And, in the midst of the upheaval, you may not be able to recognize the good. But, I assure you, it's there, and with enough time and altitude, you may eventually see that your greatest challenge birthed your greatest gifts.
As Dan Millman wrote in Way of the Peaceful Warrior, "There's never nothing going on...there are no ordinary moments."
(2) Find Support: Trees thrive because of the root systems that entangle underground.
These roots embrace one another, sharing nutrients to strengthen those trees who are lacking water, nutrients or sunlight to grow. You too are rooting into the embrace of those around you. But unlike trees (who seek support instinctively), you must ask for the support you need in order to grow stronger into you next phase.
Sit now and write down the name of (at least) three people in your life you can go to for help--people that you can honestly ask for a kind word, a receptive ear, or a safe space to share what's on your mind or heart. Sometimes, simply having this list is enough to assure your worried mind that you are not growing through your challenges alone.
(3) Everything Changes--Breathe: Here's a #Truth: Life changes quickly! Sometimes "in our favor", sometimes "against us".
But the truth is that change is the only constant in our lives, our world, and in the Universe itself. Change is how we grow, and as one of my teachers used to say, "If you're not growing, you're dying!"
Sometimes, the only thing you will be capable of during times of great change is to hold on and breathe--that is enough. Because as you breathe, you create "space" within through the in-breath/out-breath.
And into this "space", even if it's for a pinprick moment, you will experience peace and relaxation. With continued breathing, this moment will expand--from pinprick to a moment, to a longer moment, to a second, to a minute, to an hour. And, even though you are still growing through your challenges, you will do so with greater and expanding periods of peace of mind.
The Thread of Life
Trust that thread you're holding onto, it's strong enough. Even if it feels like your last thread.
Remember, the DNA of every live thing in our universe began with a single strand!
Hang on, my friend, your change is coming!
